ELESIG 'Impact' Symposium

January 29th, 2009; London Knowledge Lab, London

Overview

ELESIG is a Special Interest Group for those involved in investigations and evaluations of learners' experiences of e-learning. This meeting focused on the implications of this work for policy and practice. The day included opportunities for informal networking, but also a structured programme of activities intended to help people make connections between their work and the work of others.

The meeting was supported by the Higher Education Academy, and opened with a presentation by Martin Oliver that updated participants about the research observatory and the links between that initiative and this event, in terms of supporting community use of evidence to inform policy and practice.

An evidence-based claims game

The morning session involved a structured 'game' designed to elicit claims with implications for policy and practice, supported by evidence. The methodology was as follows:

  1. Groups discuss current work, identifying elements of each others' research and practice that seems relevant to current issues they face;
  2. These elements are recorded on a sheet as claims, and the group works together to record evidence that supports each of these;
  3. Members of each group disperse to other tables, to critique the claims made by others - both in terms of their expression (precision, clarity, etc) and warrant (nature and scope of evidence);
  4. Groups re-form around their original set of claims, to 'repair' in light of criticism, ending up with a more robust claim.

The session ended with the poster sheets of claims being displayed so that others could review them. The outcomes from this exercise are recorded here. Where claims were supported with evidence and were developed, the additional detail was recorded on a separate page within the wiki by a facilitator. At the request of the group, evidence that involved individual or institutional names was ommitted.
