It is claimed that students need support and guidance in making effective use of technology within learning and teaching. A more focused version of this claim was that students need support in developing their digital literacies.

Evidence from the ELESIG meeting in support of this included:

• The JISC/Ipsos MORI report (2008), "Great expectations of ICT: how HE institutions are measuring up".
• The JISC report by CIBER (2007) on Information Behaviour of the Researcher of the Future (the "Google Generation" report).
