It has been claimed that the National Student Survey is being used as the basis for institutional policy making. This has been challenged as an inappropriate use of the Survey.
Evidence from the ELESIG meeting about this issue included:
- A presentation by Lee Harvey to the ELESIG meeting (June 2008)
- Reports of institutions using the NSS as a criteria for educational development work, which it was suggested led to a focus on improving NSS results rather than the students' experiences
This practice was contrasted with the within-institution, formative processes that took place through the Academy's e-Learning Benchmarking and Pathfinder programmes.
