Cardiff University - Nathan Roberts

Context

At Cardiff, we are offering funding for staff to undertake innovative projects linked to the enhancement of the first year (learning) experience. This funding will enable a range of new initiatives from April 2009. The following are relevant existing practices which pre-date the current focus on the first year.

Here is the collated feedback from postcards handed out at the First Year Experience event at Cardiff from October 2008.

Under the theme of Student Engagement, initiatives include:

  • Research / focus group on first year student experiences of assessment
  • Parents' Panel for applicants
  • Undergraduate blog to give an insight into day-to-day life at university to new entrants prior to arrival.

Under the theme of Communities of Practice, initiatives include:

  • Extending the induction period in some Schools to include discussions on skills, academic standards and the research undertaken by staff.
  • Language students providing e-mentoring for GSCE and A Level candidates (see http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/languagezone/index.html )
  • Embedded information literacy training in many first year modules, delivered in partnership between academic and information services staff.
