1 Aston University VC's Report to Council Dec 2009
Following the disappointing outcome of the 2009 National Student Survey (NSS), each of the Schools and Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) has given high priority to analysing the results in detail and producing action plans to address the issues.  The plans focus mainly on enhancing student engagement, communication, assessment and feedback.  The NSS Task Group, chaired by Stewart Comfort, Director of Marketing, has a specific remit to raise the profile of the NSS and awareness of its importance to the reputation of the University, and to encourage students to complete the survey.  Briefing notes and presentations are being produced that can be personalised by Programme Leaders and other staff in briefing their students.

Learning & Teaching Strategy 2008-2012
Aston has gained sound accolades from the National Student Survey (NSS) as a small, friendly university that provides an excellent learning experience. In the 2008 NSS survey there was an 89% satisfaction rating from our students that resulted in the current position of 11th in the UK. In 2008 the university gained 12th position in the UK

Target 2008-09: Survey UG students attitudes to and understanding of the NSS (UG projects, second term). Identify areas of concern to students in the school. - Feedback findings to School
Assessment & feedback – an issue consistently raised in NSS results. Work being undertaken by the L & T Champions, eg. a user trial on e-CAF (Electronic Coursework & Assessment Feedback system) for 2008/09 as new e-Assessment tool. The trial will study the learner’s perception of structured feedback against their observed behaviour and overall performance. Ultimate goal to address issue of assessment and feedback to improve NSS results in the future.

Reports showing all the questions of the survey, drilled down into the component questions of the seven sections are available internally from the Learning and Teaching Enhancement Office.

The Learning and Teaching Committee (LTC) takes overall responsibility for seeking to address the institutional-wide concerns raised in the results and to ensure that the subject-specific concerns are being addressed within departments and faculties.
This data has been sent to all undergraduate Directors of Studies and Heads of Departments, together with the Students’ Union for discussion at Departmental meetings as well as Staff Student Liaison Committees (and the SU’s Academic Council). Learning and Teaching Committee will recieve reports as part of QA51 (Annual Monitoring of Units and Programmes) for every undergraduate programme and the Learning and Teaching Enhancement Office is working with departments to help implement their strategies to further enhance the learning and teaching provision for students at the University of Bath.

3 Bath Spa University Quality Assurance Processes:Each year, subjects are asked to write annual reports, based on data, evaluating the current state of their provision. These reports utilise a risk assessment approach and result in an action plan, accompanied by a contextual narrative.

Action plans are produced by each reporting unit (.doc), compiled to map our provision onto nationally recognised subject groups. In turn, these inform school plans and the institution's internal review process.

4 University of Bedfordshire Variety of student surveys:
Once the data from the surveys have been collected, the data are then analysed. The outcomes of the surveys are distributed to departments and faculties and sent to the University's governing committees for discussion. The results are also sent to the Student Consultative Committee, which is a committee made up of Student representatives and University staff, including staff from all the faculties .

You can find out the results and actions from these surveys by checking this website or by picking up a copy of Life, the University's newspaper which is produced eight times a year.
http://www.beds.ac.uk/studentlife/current/experience/surveys The Student Experience Questionnaire or SEQ asks you about all aspects of University life, ranging from your views on the catering facilities to what you think of the teaching you are receiving. The questionnaire goes out to all students at the University in May each year and you will receive a copy of the questionnaire to complete during one of your lectures.

The Unit Student Perception questionnaires, or USPs as they are also known, are your way of telling the University what you think of the units you are taking. The questionnaire asks you about your level of satisfaction with how the unit ran, about how you have received feedback on your progress and asks for your views on how it might be improved. You will be invited to respond electronically to one of these questionnaires in each unit of your units on BREO, where you will get feedback on what you and your classmates have said and what actions, if any, will be taken as a result.

Module Questionnaire: A Module Questionnaireword format (with guidance notes)word format should be given out to students on taught programmes at the end of each module and is designed to address specific issues relating to this. It is recommended that this is given out and collected in class as this tends to elicit a better level of response from students or is completed by students online. When the questionnaire is returned it should analysed by the Module Coordinator in liaison with their Head of Department and any appropriate action should be undertaken to address student concerns and the results reported to relevant Department and Schools committees and to the relevant Student-Staff Exchange Committee.

End of Year Survey: The End of Year Survey seeks to elicit feedback about general issues relating to the student's teaching and learning experience during that year. All students (UG & PG) at the College are encouraged to complete the survey.

From NSS 2008/09 paper to Teaching Quality & Enhancement Committee:
In January 2009 each School was sent the following NSS reports and was asked to consider and respond to these along similar lines to Visiting Examiners’ reports, that is, some reports were sent for information purposes only with no response needed, others highlighted items requiring responses. Schools were asked to provide a response to those matters highlighted in terms of explaining why these low/declining mean scores might have occurred as well as detailing any action that has already been put in place/will be put in place to try to rectify this for future years. The responses received from Schools have been highlighted below as have areas for which a response from the relevant School is still outstanding.

Open comments were included and departments offered responses to these as appropriate.

From 2008 paper to L&T Committee on 2008  NSS results:
All Heads of School have received copies of the (JACS code based) ‘Subject area’ data applicable to their School provision.
all Heads of School be sent qualitative data relating to their provision. The qualitative data is based on students’ responses to two open questions on the most positive and negative aspects of their programme and is available at
departmental level. It is proposed that this data be sent to Heads of School so that they may ‘filter’ data where the respondent is at risk of being identified.
the Heads of School be asked to undertake a critical evaluation of their School’s NSS Results, in conjunction with the findings from the Learning and Teaching aspects of the SSS (where applicable – these results are planned to be disseminated before the end of September). That a report be sent to their Director of Education so that it may be discussed at the appropriate College Committee in November.
the Directors of Education be asked to report on proposed action for each of their Schools. (APOD will shortly undertake discussions with Colleges on their Learning and Development Plans and will discuss actions arising from
Schools’ responses to the NSS as part of this exercise. Any actions requiring significant resource will be discussed with LDU).

On an annual basis, GLEU will be offering the series of workshops outlined below and publicised on Goldsmiths' Events Calendar. These deal with different topics related to learning and teaching in higher education. These topics are identified through talking to academic and academic related staff around the College, analyses of the NSS and the International Student Barometer, and other quality and feedback systems at Goldsmiths.  At times, topics are also chosen in relation to the specific experience, expertise and scholarly interests of the GLEU staff.

Minutes of Nov 2007 L&TQ Committee noted that Departments had been sent a detailed analysis of their results and comparative data; that some areas identified for development were already being addressed, for example, the feedback on assessment project; the results also indicated where periodic review might be appropriate, such as Social Work; that the National Student Survey data could only give a broad indication of where areas for development were and that departments should be offered support to analyse their data further and investigate, through both the quantitative data and the open comments, what might be influencing the results. NSS results would also feed into periodic programme/departmental reviews; that it would be important for the Committee to find out how academic departments intend to address the results of the survey. http://www.gold.ac.uk/media/5LTQC14-11-07min.pdf

21 University of Greenwich QAA institutional audit 2009, Briefing Paper:
The outcomes of the NSS and USS are scrutinised and discussed widely at a range of levels: within Schools, at the LQC, in the Vice-Chancellor’s Group (VCG), the Executive Committee and at Academic Council. The NSS plays an important role in stimulating the University to consider particular enhancement activities in depth
Following the NSS in 2007, the University Executive required that each School, along with the ILS and OSA, draw up action plans based on the strengths and weaknesses identified.
Scrutiny is given to both the quantitative and qualitative feedback contained within student surveys.

The OSA and the LQU also conducted a substantial centrally funded project on assessment feedback to students during 2007/08, consisting of four strands. The project, which is now continuing into 2008/09, has focused on identification of current and effective practices, on a survey of student views and, in order to complete the project this academic session, will undertake to focus on staff development activities and the revision and enhancement of support materials.

University Student Survey: same format as NSS but for other year groups Workshop on assessment criteria, linked to NSS:
The National Student Survey asks whether „the criteria used in marking have been made clear in advance‟. This has led to us publishing assessment criteria in advance, usually in a course handbook. Is this enough? Are we aiming for transparency or clarity? Do students understand the criteria? Do we?
In this session you will be examining the purpose of assessment criteria and their role in students‟ lives. We will identify how students and staff can work together to develop and use a shared language of assessment that supports students‟ learning.

28 Imperial College NSS 2010 page on 'Reporter' website:
"the Rector has placed assessment and feedback high on his agenda. He has written to heads of departments and directors of undergraduate studies, asking them to make this a priority, and requesting that departments lay down clear timelines indicating when students can expect feedback for work submitted."

"Recent years have seen the profile of teaching raised enormously. We have introduced a large number of awards for teaching, pastoral care and research supervision to reward commitment and innovative approaches, and to demonstrate the value we place on excellent teaching and teachers. This recognition of teaching, supervision and pastoral care has also been integrated into the College’s academic promotions and PRDP processes.

This coming year the Dean of Learning and Teaching will be working closely with the directors of undergraduate studies, to encourage them to share good practice in teaching and student support. We have lots of great things going on within different departments, but we’re not so good at telling each other about them.

In addition, a speaker at Education Day 2010 showed us the value of having an insight into students’ experiences at A level and so we will be appointing consultant school teachers in the coming year to help us understand these. There is a fine balance between encouraging students to develop as independent learners and supporting them in adjusting to the new challenges of university. In achieving that balance it is very helpful to know more about students’ A Level curricula, their ways of working and their expectations, which is our aim in getting guidance directly from their teachers."

http://www2.imperial.ac.uk/blog/reporter/2010/08/20/nss-results-2010/ "We use a number of different surveys, such as SOLE (Student Online Evaluation), which surveys undergraduates’ experiences at the College three times a year, and engage with postgraduates through PRES (Postgraduate Research Experience Survey). The Student Academic Experience Working Party and the relatively new post of Dean of Teaching and Learning were created specifically to work on identifying and addressing issues around student academic satisfaction. In order to focus more closely on the weaker areas the NSS survey identifies we will also be modifying questions in SOLE to reflect the NSS format."

good practice. Additionally, results of student feedback from the NSS in
relation to the subject area concerned should be provided as part of the base

http://www.kingston.ac.uk/aboutkingstonuniversity/howtheuniversityworks/policiesandregulations/quality-assurance-procedures/documents/section-l.pdf Kingston also surveys its first and second year and postgraduate students
each year. These surveys are administered by Student Services, while other
areas of the University, such as Information Services conduct their own
annual user survey. The outcomes of these surveys are reported to SEG.
The ADC works closely with the University’s faculties on quality assurance (QA) issues arising from learning, teaching and assessment. This includes offering support for:
    * preparing for QA events (eg internal subject reviews); and
    * responding to the outcomes of such events and other formal QA processes (eg student feedback, annual monitoring and external examiner reports).

Key structures for this support are the faculty action plans for learning, teaching and assessment and bi-monthly meetings with the associate dean (or equivalent) for each faculty. ADC support will include, as appropriate, staff development, resource development, the provision of appropriate learning technologies and other services such as:
    * analysis of the outcomes of QA processes for the dissemination of good practice;
    * facilitation of feedback from students;
    * facilitation of the provision of student data; and
    * facilitation of other student involvement (course representatives, peer assisted learning, skills centres, ambassadors, interns and communication with Kingston University Students’ Union).

The ADC liaises closely with the University’s Academic Registry and staff are members of key QA committees such as the Quality Enhancement Committee and the Academic Regulations Committee.

Finally, the ADC is the University’s link with the Higher Education Academy and to HEFCE with respect to learning and teaching and widening participation.

"
Section 5.5 Consideration of NSS results at departmental/school level

1. NSS results are circulated to departments/schools as soon as is practicable in September each year, with the expectation that these are discussed within the department/school including discussion with the relevant SSCC [staff-student consultative committee].

2. Each Michaelmas Term, the FLTC (Undergraduate) will organise a half-away day (or alternatively a meeting of their FLTC) at which it will discuss NSS results across the faculty with in order to develop an NSS action plan to which all departments/schools will 'sign up'. The chair of the FLTC (Undergraduate) will also take the action plan to their Faculty Board for endorsement by heads of department/school.

3. At the January meeting of LTC the chairs of FLTCs (Undergraduate) will report on their faculty's NSS results and the action being taken in response to these. This report will include the faculty action plan, for consideration for approval by LTC.

4. NSS results will be discussed in the Epiphany Term Learning and Teaching Meetings between FLTC chairs and departments/schools, in terms of the results themselves and progress in addressing the faculty's manifesto/action plan.

5. Departments/schools are required to include in their annual review report submitted at the start of the following year a commentary on the effectiveness of the action taken during the year under review on the previous year's NSS results (for example, annual review reports on 2010/11 will include a commentary on the effectiveness of steps taken in 2010/11 to address the NSS 2010 results)."

The searchable Academic Practice database contains many examples of tried and tested strategies which you may be able to adopt. The CeLT website also has extensive web resources on Lectures and Lecturing and on Assessment and Feedback which might form the basis for discussion at departmental meetings or for small scale projects. See the CeLT website for the full set of resources. Please contact Rachel Forsyth (Curriculum Development and Innovation: r.m.forsyth@mmu.ac.uk) or Alicia Prowse (Student Experience: a.prowse@mmu.ac.uk) if you would like individual advice or support. You can also talk to your Faculty Senior Learning and Teaching Fellow(s) about your plans and contact CeLT for help with any part of the improvement plan.

Workshops: Addressing NSS Results: action planning to improve the student experience
The Centre for Academic Standards and Quality Enhancement and the Centre for Learning and Teaching are offering this workshop as an opportunity for colleagues to get together and discuss effective strategies for improving the student experience.

The session will open with a brief overview of the 2010 NSS results set in a national and institutional context and will then move on to consider practical approaches to improve the student experience in the context of individual programmes or subjects. There will be a strong emphasis on sharing the many examples of good practice at MMU, and the workshop will address the strong link between NSS action-planning and the annual monitoring exercise.

We anticipate that this workshop will be of interest to staff in a variety of roles from across the institution, including Heads of Department, programme leaders and MMUnion colleagues.

We would also value the participation of administrative and technical staff, and we are working closely with Learning and Teaching Support Group Managers to identify appropriate administrative staff within each Faculty/Campus - could administrative staff please check with your Learning and Teaching Support Group Manager if you are interested in registering, and technical staff with your line manager.

The [Annual Monitoring & Review] process provides the opportunity for reflection on all survey data, such as the National Student Survey (NSS), International Student Barometer (ISB), Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES), internal surveys or focus groups. The main issues arising from this data must be specifically addressed in the AMR report and the actions taken detailed in the action plan. Monitoring that this has been carried out will be undertaken by the relevant FTLC.

237. Areas identified for enhancement are followed through with specific action plans at Senior Management level which are cascaded down to staff in the relevant areas.

146.
Schools are required to report on actions taken in response to student feedback and on how student feedback informs the enhancement agenda. Many SSQRs focused this year on enhancing methods of collecting feedback, but others comment on how the data has been used to improve the student learning experience. Examples include improving timetabling arrangements, liaising with LLR over reported high noise levels in some parts of the library, improving the availability of specialist equipment on Post graduate programmes, and providing extra support for dissertation preparation. In addition, two Schools, Science and Technology and Nottingham Business School, have included actions in their School Enhancement Action plans that relate directly to enhancing student feedback mechanisms and putting actions in place as a result of student feedback

Staff from across the University were welcomed to the meeting
by Professor Nick Miles, Associate Dean for External Relations,
before a series of brief presentations about the NSS and its
implications for the University were given by speakers such as Dr
Paul Greatrix (Registrar), Matt Gayle (Students’ Union Education

Departments and faculties also carry out surveys on individual courses and use lecture questionnaires to gain feedback on the quality of lectures. The views of students are also represented by undergraduate and postgraduate Joint Consultative Committees (JCC). Colleges collect feedback from students through tutorial evaluation questionnaires, college questionnaires, students and Tutors/College Advisers meetings, and annual meetings between students and their Senior Tutor and/or Head of House.

Interpreting and utilising outcomes from the National Student Survey (PowerPoint Presentation) http://www.worcester.ac.uk/aqu/documents/NSS_outcomes-Nov09.ppt
The National Student Survey can be a valuable tool for gaining a broad perspective of student opinion at University, Institute and course levels. This presentation comprises a practical demonstration of use that can be made of the data (both at public level on http://www.unistats.com/ and more detailed data for internal use), outlines the key outcomes of the Survey and details the University’s overarching approach to responding to the results.

Preparing for the Educational Enhancement Process

The Reflective Statement is the key document for the Educational Enhancement Process (EEP). It should describe how a School enhances the standard of its educational provision by providing a brief review of the past, an analysis of the School’s current practice and an outline of future plans. Download the Educational Enhancement Process handbook.

The Centre for Educational Development provides support to Schools that are preparing for EEP, in particular, by offering advice and guidance on drafting the Reflective Statement. Follow-up support to disseminate good practice and/or address any developmental needs identified in the EEP panel report is also available.

NATIONAL STUDENT SURVEY (NSS)
The Board received a progress report on the NSS in 2009/10. Members noted the Autumn term activities which had taken place, including: the submission of action plans, which had all now been approved by the Quality Enhancement Committee (QEC); meetings with Heads of Division and teaching colleagues; and meetings with partner colleges.

Unistats and the NSS - what you need to know
The NSS (National Student Survey) is a major undertaking for the University and there are important points about its results and their links to student recruitment that all colleagues ought to be aware of. This session is intended to update colleagues on the data which appears on the Unistats website, how the data is used and who the users are.

This session is likely to be of interest to admissions tutors, admissions support staff and any colleagues who lead applicant open days, advise students on their study choices or produce course marketing material.

From quality enhancement strategy:
On receipt of the NSS and Omnibus survey results the NSS/Omnibus Sub-Committee will decide priority concerns and discuss with Schools the appropriate course of action. In addition we will utilise the NSS and Omnibus as a tool to discover good practice and promote. Include feedback to students on actions taken as a result of NSS, e.g. posters.

Cardiff University recognises the importance of external surveys such as the NSS in providing prospective and current students with information about individual Universities and the ways in which survey results can help to determine institutional strategy, particularly in relation to the enhancement of students’ academic and social experiences.  Results of the survey are shared with the Students’ Union and academic schools

In order to maximise the impact of the key messages arising from the performance of the University in the NSS, a ‘traffic light’ model has been developed to represent the scores attained by individual subject areas against the individual statements and the thematic areas contained within the NSS.  In receiving this detailed analysis of results, Heads of academic schools within the University have being asked to provide evidence of their mechanisms for addressing NSS scores and of feeding back issues raised within the NSS to their students.

NSS results are also analysed and considered through the University’s established quality assurance systems.  The Academic Standards and Quality Committee receives an annual report of NSS outcomes, with particular reference to addressing issues arising from performance across the survey’s six thematic areas.  Specifically, a number of initiatives are being undertaken to identify and enhance the mechanisms for improving feedback on assessment to students.

Addressing the NSS: Practical Feedback at
Cardiff University
2 November 2009 12.00—14.00 Trevithick
Seminar Rooms
The recent NSS results show that even though a great deal of work and effort has been put into providing meaningful feedback to students on their work, there is still much more work to be done in this challenging area. This QUILT session will offer an overview of trends, highlighted by the NSS, in relation to feedback and then present a range of Cardiff based examples of practical feedback.

A sub-group of the learning & teaching committee in the School of Nursing & Midwifery Studies has been established to address issues around the NSS: This subgroup is charged with identifying issues for improvement and actions to ensure that improvements in relation to the student experience are implemented.
